Kindergarten

Smithville Montessori Academy provides a kindergarten program that is designed to prepare the child for entry into the public school first grade. The program blends traditional Montessori methods with some of the structure of traditional schooling to make the transfer to public school easier for our students.

Practical Life and Sensorial:
Children continue to learn about the world through traditional Montessori materials and activities. These areas allow the children to explore critical concepts that aid their development.

Language:
Our kindergarten classes learn to read and write, assigning sounds to letters, and recognizing a variety of sight words. Students are introduced to puncutation, capitalization, sentence structure, and creative writing. The language curriculum includes extensive use of books to develop the child's reading and comprehension skills.

Math:
Concrete mathematical concepts are introduced with a variety of materials that enable the child to understand numbers, quantities, and symbols as well as comprehending numbers in the decimal system. Children identify and order numbers 1 through 100, add, subract, measure, and tell time. They learn to use graphs, count money, and work with simple fractions.

Cultural: Cultural subjects include history, geography, art, physical science, music, and physical movement. Children learn about the weather, the solar system, plants and animals. History comes to life as children study flags, historical leaders, maps, and globes.

Outdoor Activities:
Fresh air activities are encouraged and include ride-on toys, play equipment, and organized games. Children also participate in planting, growing, and harvesting vegetables and flowers as part of our outdoor program.
